Today, on Human Rights Day, we reflect on the ongoing struggle for intersex rights in South Africa. As we celebrate our nation’s commitment to human rights, we must acknowledge that intersex individuals continue to face significant barriers to healthcare access, legal recognition, and social acceptance.
The Current Landscape
Intersex individuals have a fundamental right to:
- Live free from violence and harmful practices
- Access appropriate healthcare services
- Make informed decisions about their bodies
- Be protected from discrimination
However, many challenges persist:
- Discrimination by healthcare providers
- Continued practice of Intersex Genital Mutilation (IGM)
- Limited access to mental health support
- Lack of legal protections
Our Call to Action
We ask the South African government to:
- Recognize and protect intersex human rights
- Ensure access to appropriate medical care
- Ban non-consensual medical interventions
- Implement comprehensive anti-discrimination policies
Moving Forward
Join us in advocating for change. Together, we can create a South Africa where intersex individuals are fully protected, respected, and celebrated.
